This page contains information about Cadence products presently used at Penn College in both our two-year Electronics and Computer Technology programs (EE, RO) as well as both our four-year degrees, Bachelor of Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology (BEE) and Automation Engineering Technology: Robotics & Automation (AER).

These degrees are designed to provide individuals with the hands-on skills and knowledge required in electronics engineering technology careers. Upon graduation our students often work as members of electronics design teams, support of electronics manufacturing operations, engineering liaisons, and other technical positions. These positions often require familiarity and proficiency with modern circuit design and analysis tools. To prepare our students for these positions we incorporate the use of Cadence’s Allegro Design Entry CIS (schematic capture tool), Allegro AMS Simulator (PSpice circuit simulator) and introduce Allegro PCB Design XL (circuit board design software) software tools in our curriculum.

Software Tools for the Engineering Technologist

EET 116 EET 158

In these courses students are introduced to Cadence software packages to learn the basics of circuit schematic capture (using Allegro Design Entry CIS) and AC simulation (using Allegro AMS Simulator). This introduction will prepare them to successfully use these common industry tools throughout their Penn College degree work and beyond.

Beginner's User Manual for PSpice

The file linked above is a tutorial written by previous Penn College students to show how to use Allegro AMS Simulator for typical analysis problems.

Linear Integrated Circuits and Linear Circuits Applications

EET 206 EET 207

In these courses students use Allegro Design Entry CIS and Allegro AMS Simulator to model the AC and transient behavior of typical op amp based linear circuits. The models are compared to real world circuit behavior to allow the students to use these industry standard tools in the way that practicing technologists use them in the field.

Analog Systems and Lab

EET 300 EET 301

In these courses students use Allegro Design Entry CIS and Allegro AMS Simulator to model AC and transient behavior of advanced circuits. More advanced aspects of Cadence software products are explored and used with the goal of preparing the student to use the full Cadence software suite to prepare and create their senior design projects.

Electronic Prototyping and Design and Lab

EET 324 EET 325

In these courses advanced aspects of Cadence’s Allegro AMS Simulator are taught (real world component modeling, temperature dependence, and Monte Carlo tolerance analysis). Additionally, the students are introduced to PCB design using Allegro PCB Design XL. Each student uses PCB design software to create PCB designs which can then be fabricated.

Senior Project Design and Implementation

EET 494 EET 496

These courses make up a full-year sequence where senior BEE students plan and execute a capstone design project. Many of our students use the full Cadence software suite to design, model, document, and possibly fabricate PCBs for these projects.
