Q&A with Becky

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR CAREER BEFORE COMING TO PENN COLLEGE?

I graduated from the radiography program at Penn College in 2013. Then, I worked as a radiologic technologist at The Williamsport Regional Medical Center (now known as UPMC Susquehanna) until August 2019, which is when I became the clinical supervisor of the radiography students that rotate through UPMC Susquehanna.

WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE AS A CLINICAL SUPERVISOR ENTAIL?

I work with the students in the clinical setting, which for me is specifically in UPMC Susquehanna, and I teach them how to perform x-rays on real patients.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING RADIOGRAPHERS?

My advice for those interested in radiography is to do job shadowing if possible. Develop good organizational skills, and focus on improving in math and science related subjects.

IF SOMEONE WHERE INTERESTED IN COMING TO PENN COLLEGE FOR RADIOGRAPHY, WHAT MIGHT YOU TELL HIM/HER?

I would tell them that radiography is a fast-paced, demanding, yet rewarding career with lots of room for advancement. After becoming a radiographer, students can go on to other modalities like CT, MRI, and Radiation Therapy, etc. And no matter where they work, they will get the satisfaction of directly impacting the lives of their patients.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR CAREER?

It has been amazing to see how much the students have grown since their first day in the program. They overcame the odds presented by COVID-19, and are now passing their ARRT Board exams and joining the workforce.

WHY DO YOU THINK EMPLOYERS ARE ATTRACTED TO PENN COLLEGE GRADUATES?

Employers are attracted to Penn College students because of the experience that they receive. The Radiography students visit a variety of sites, which allows them to become familiar with different models of equipment and methods of workflow. By the end of their education, they become adaptable radiologic technologists.
