Q&A with Caleb

WHAT LED YOU TO PENN COLLEGE?

Positive testimonials from friends, focus on hands-on experience, and Dr. Ask were big parts of my decision.

WHEN & HOW DID YOU KNOW INDUSTRIAL DESIGN WAS THE CAREER PATH FOR YOU?

I grew up dreaming of new futures, modes of being, and the inventions needed to make them real. It took a mentor from my previous Makerspace to put a name to what I was already passionate for.

WAS THERE ANYTHING IN YOUR CHILDHOOD THAT INSPIRED YOU TO PICK THIS PATH?

I found an OWI robotics and soldering kit in my grandparent's basement when I was five. That project never worked but it taught me I didn't have to take the world as it was handed to me, that kit empowered me to question the way things are and to design a better solution.

HOW DOES THE WORLD OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN INSPIRE YOU?

Industrial design attracts people who are fascinated by exploring the boundary between the ideal and the practical. Those people inspire me and I wanted to be around them.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PROFESSOR AND WHY?

Dr. Ask is an inspiring person whose first goal is obviously to enable your imagination by growing your ability.

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY CLUBS OR ORGANIZATIONS?

Yes. I'm involved with the Society of Inventors and Mad Scientists (SIMS). I frequent the Gamers Guild's Nerf Skirmishes and am looking to join Baja and the Music Makers Club

IF SOMEONE WERE CONSIDERING PENN COLLEGE, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM?

A big part of college is the social framework that it creates and the opportunities that arise as a result; Penn College has crafted its framework well, and there are plenty of opportunities for students who are ready to rise to the occasion.

HOW IS PENN COLLEGE HELPING YOU ACHIEVE YOUR EDUCATIOAL AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS?

Working in the Dr. Welch Workshop constantly presents me with opportunities to develop my skills, and even better, enable others to chase their imaginations.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST VISIT TO THE DR. WELCH WORKSHOP?

My first interaction with the Dr. Welch Workshop was for my job interview. I was overjoyed at the opportunity to apply myself to something with such a visceral impact, and still am every day.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SPACE TO STUDENTS UNFAMILIAR WITH IT?

The Dr. Welch Workshop is a free-to-use workshop/studio space for all disciplines. But more importantly, it's a community of people centered on developing their skills and the skills of others.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PROJECT THAT TOOK SHAPE IN THE DR. WELCH WORKSHOP?

My projects are the projects of our patrons. So far I've seen shopping cart deck chairs, an electric guitar, and a replica of Thor's hammer. Students also come in to work on projects for class - architecture students build cardboard chairs as part of their coursework and others create 3D-printed inulin molecule models for a biology course. We've even worked on Battle Bots for SWORD's competitions.

HOW DOES THE DR. WELCH WORKSHOP STIMULATE INNOVATION?

The Dr. Welch Workshop expects safety, and sometimes we give advice on how to reach a specific outcome, but otherwise, we actively encourage problem-solving through trial-and-error which inevitably requires creativity. That liberty we provide, combined with interdisciplinary experience and collaboration, helps create connections that weren't there before and a problem-solving ability that is invaluable.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ALL WHO INVESTED IN THIS SPACE?

Your investment provides a community centered around creation for hundreds of students and we're continuously expanding our reach and capabilities. Thank you.
