Concrete class eyes precast possibilities

Students in the Decorative Concrete class, taught by Joe F. DiBucci, recently visited Lycoming Vault & Precast in Montoursville. The company produces a variety of precast concrete products, from septic tanks to light pole bases.

“Traveling to a precast concrete plant was a great opportunity for the students to be able to see a different side of the industry,” said DiBucci, an instructor of building construction technology: concrete and masonry. “The students are used to doing small size precast concrete projects in lab, so this off-campus tour of the plant was able to open their eyes up to the scale that it can become.”

Precast concrete products are made by pouring concrete into a pre-shaped mold, or “form.”

“(It was) very nice to showcase local companies involved in today’s concrete sciences sector,” said Nathan E. Kline, a concrete science technology student from Montoursville. “The enjoyable tour allowed our students to see new concrete concepts firsthand: Concrete is more than sidewalks and roadways.”
