Softball coach Stackhouse wins 100, breaks record

Although she has only been with the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s softball program for less than four full seasons, coach Angela Stackhouse has become the quickest to reach 100 wins in any sport dating back to the mid-1960s.

On Monday, Stackhouse reached the century mark in her 135th game. Current baseball coach Chris Howard also reached 100 wins in his fourth season, but it was in his 143rd game. Going into this season, his 18th, Howard’s teams had won 342 games.

Other Wildcat coaches who had 100-plus wins during their careers include:
Mike Stanzione, baseball, 13 seasons from 1992-2004 — 261.
Bambi Hawkins, women’s volleyball, 16 seasons from 2000-12 and 2017-19 — 189.
Roger Harris, women’s softball, 14 seasons from 2004-15 — 177.
Gene Bruno, men’s basketball, 15 seasons from 1996-2011 — 153.
Andy Richardson, men’s soccer, 11 seasons from 1994-2004 — 105.
Enrique Castillo, men’s soccer, seven seasons from 2006-12 — 102.

Also, this past week the tennis and esports teams’ regular seasons ended, and this coming week, baseball, softball, lacrosse and golf will also end, with the latter three already assured of postseason action.

SOFTBALL
Mackenzie Weaver of Montoursville hurled her second one-hitter of the season in a nonconference game at Elmira College on Monday. She struck out six and didn’t issue a walk in the Wildcats’ 13-0 first-game win and she sparked the offense with four runs batted in.

In the second-game 10-0 win against Elmira, Faith Anderson of Lykens twirled a five-hit shutout and the Wildcats got two-run home runs from Hailey DeBrody of Cogan Station and Sofia LaSpina of Bellmore, New York, to hand Stackhouse her 100th-career victory and even the team’s lifetime record against Elmira at 4-4.

Hosting Penn State Abington on Thursday, Penn College swept by scores of 2-1 in eight innings and 9-0 in five innings, and by doing so secured a spot in the United East Volt Division playoffs that begin May 1.

In the opener, Grace Lorson of Jersey Shore doubled in a game-tying run in the sixth inning and Margaret Mangene of Boalsburg plated the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth as Weaver picked up her 10th win of the season in the circle and ended with a four-hitter, striking out 15 and walking one.

In the nightcap, freshman Fayth Anderson of Lykens spun her first collegiate career one-hitter, fanning eight and walking one, while Weaver, Ivvy Morder of Mechanicsburg and Jesse Brumbaugh of McClure each drove in two runs.

Entertaining Penn State Berks on Saturday, the teams split for the second time this season as Berks took the first game 4-1 and Penn College won the second 5-4.

After Weaver pitched five shutout innings in the opener, four of six Penn College errors led to four unearned runs in the sixth frame and ruined Weaver’s eight strikeouts and no walk effort.

The Wildcats erupted for 10 hits and took advantage of five Berks errors in the second game for their win. Offensive leaders were Mangene, with two RBIs, Lorson, who homered, and Brumbaugh’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

BASEBALL
Facing first-time foe Alfred University on Tuesday, the Wildcats took both games of a nonconference doubleheader by the scores of 15-3 and 11-1.

Quinn Hanafin of Sayre was one of three Penn College players with two hits in the first contest, and he drove in three runs while Matt Munoz of Tobyhanna and Adam Aldenderfer of Trout Run both plated two runs and Aldenderfer scored three times.

David Wagner of Perkiomenville, with two hits and three RBIs, and Jaydon Goebel of Honey Brook, with three hits and two RBIs, keyed the offense in the second game against Alfred.

At St. Mary’s (Md.) College on Friday in the first of a UE three-game series, Penn College lost 8-2. Dallas Griess of Williamsport had two of the Wildcats’ six hits.

In Saturday’s twin bill, the Wildcats won the first game 8-3 and then lost 8-0.

Griess had three RBIs in the opener as he and Goebel both homered to help Griffin Vollman of Williamsport improve to 4-1 on the mound.

The Wildcats were held to five hits and committed three errors in the second-game defeat. Griess — with two doubles — and Shawn Townsend of Hatboro each had two hits.

MEN’S LACROSSE
In a UE match on Saturday at Bryn Athyn, Penn College won 19-3 to assure itself of a playoff berth for the fourth season in a row.

Aidan McFalls of Gilbertsville scored four goals and had seven assists, Harrison Schlachta of Collegeville had four goals and AJ Dotson of Wilmington, Delaware, added three goals and an assist. Also, Joey Rebilas of Pennsauken, New Jersey, was 12 of 12 in faceoffs, Michael Stank of York Haven was 11 of 11, and starting keeper Dax Shallis of Coatesville had seven saves.

GOLF
Peyton Mussina of Montoursville placed second over the weekend in the Gettysburg Spring Shootout at Penn National Golf Club in Fayetteville. With overall lower team scores on Sunday than on Saturday, the Wildcats finished seventh in a field of 12 in their final tune-up before the UE Championships.

After an opening round and best-of-the-day 3-under 69 Saturday on the par 72, 6,794-yard Founders Course, Mussina followed that up on Sunday with an even-par 72 and 141 total — second only to McDaniel’s Charlie Dolan, who medaled with rounds 70-70—140.

Gettysburg “A” captured the team crown with rounds of 296-287—583 and was followed by Franklin & Marshall 302-292—594, McDaniel 298-297—595, Swarthmore 302-297—599, Drew 311-295—606, Stevens 307-302—609, Penn College 317-297—614, Gettysburg “B” 308-311—619, Dickinson 314-307—621, SUNY Delhi 319-303—622, Stephenson 324-302—626 and Susquehanna 338-338—676.

In the same event a year ago, Mussina had a two-day 153 total to tie for 11th, and in team competition, the Wildcats recorded a 630.

Also last week, Mussina was awarded the UE Golfer of the Week honor for the sixth time in his career after rounds of a career-low 67, 74, and 71 and a second-place finish in a field of 69 at the Northeast Shootout at The DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 8-9.

MEN’S TENNIS
Closing out its regular season with three matches in three days, Penn College opened with a 7-2 loss at Penn State Abington on Thursday with Logan Ogden of South Williamsport and Matt Williams of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, posting wins at Nos. 3 and 5 singles, respectively.

In a 7-2 win on Friday at Lancaster Bible College, Ogden, Hunter Knosky of Camp Hill, Jayden Manbeck of Bernville and Connor Pierce of Wellsboro recorded wins in both singles and doubles.

On Saturday at Cairn University, Shuler was the lone double-winner in a 5-4 team loss.
