Pennsylvania College of Technology students helped 99 local taxpayers file their 2023 income tax returns.

Under the direction of Bob M. Nolan, assistant professor of business administration/accounting and finance, students in the college’s accounting and business administration majors staffed a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site in the college’s Madigan Library from Feb. 5 to April 15.

Their work resulted in $86,222 in federal income tax refunds for the clients, and state refunds of $4,397.

VITA is an IRS program that offers free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. Students who help at the VITA site receive IRS training and certification at the beginning of the spring semester.

The program provides both a service to the community and a learning experience for students.

In addition to Nolan, Shawn Twigg, a 2020 Penn College graduate and former VITA student volunteer, lent assistance and experience. This is the second year that Twigg, a financial adviser with The Comprehensive Financial Group, has helped. He holds a bachelor’s in business administration: banking and finance.

Penn College offers an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree in accounting, as well as a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a specialization in banking and finance. All three options are available both on campus and online. To learn more, call 570-327-4505 or visit www.pct.edu/accounting.
